They will be replaced. RIDOT has inspected these wooden deck bridges every three months. Both bridges are structurally deficient and have advanced deterioration of structural elements. Originally used by the Providence, Warren and Bristol Railroad, the bridges date back to 1900 and were repurposed in 1990 as part of the original construction of the bike path. Two years ago, RIDOT closed the sidewalks on both structures because of the deteriorating condition of the bridges. "It's no secret that our bridges are suffering from years of deterioration and lack of proper funding for repairs. Unfortunately, that is true when it comes to these two bike path bridges," RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, Jr. said. "Based on the level of deterioration weâre seeing, we must close them for the safety of all path users." "Our scenic bikeways add to the beauty and quality of recreating and living in Rhode Island," said DEM Director Janet Coit. "Although it may pose an inconvenience for East Bay Bike Path users, performing repairs and maintenance are necessary in order to ensure public access and enhance enjoyment of these recreational assets. There are more than 60 miles of bike paths in Rhode Island that are used by nearly two million people each year." As part of the recently approved major amendment to the stateâs Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), RIDOT moved up the funding to replace these bridges by three years. RIDOT will begin design work shortly, and that work will be ongoing next year. As design advances, RIDOT will create a construction schedule. The bridges will remain closed during this process. $10 million has been allocated for this work. During the closure, signs will direct path users to dismount and walk their bikes on the sidewalks of the nearby vehicular bridges. Shoulder widths are narrow on these brides, and riding over the bridges is not recommended. 09/25/2019 Governor Signs Executive Order Prohibiting Sale of Flavored e-Cigarettes Governor Gina M. Raimondo today signed an Executive Order directing the Department of Health to establish emergency regulations prohibiting the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. The Executive Order also puts in place a number of other measures designed to the curb the initiation of e-cigarette use by young people. Statement from Michael W. Carroll, Barrington Town Council President: Barrington has long been concerned with the effects of these new tobacco products on our youth. We passed an ordinance raising the age to buy tobacco products to 21 and, when it was struck down on the grounds that only the General Assembly can make such a law, we appealed. I applaud the Governor for her bold action in issuing an order that will protect the people of Barrington and all Rhode Islanders, especially our youth, from these dangerous products. 09/25/2019 Pipeline Leak Repair Slated to Begin in September; New Water Restrictions in Place Contractor to begin work to fix on-going leak. BCWA switched back to East Providence water on September 17 with water use reduction requested. From BCWA: The Bristol County Water Authority's (BCWA) selected contractor is to begin repairs to the East Bay pipeline. The BCWA has made a smooth transition to our backup water supply with the City of East Providence. BCWA customers will notice no difference in the water quality, as East Providence is also supplied by the Providence Water Supply Board. As of Tuesday, 9/24, outdoor water use will be allowed on odd/even days based on street address. (House addresses ending in an odd number can water on odd calendar days; addresses ending in an even number on even days.) Depending on water consumption, BCWA may need to enforce bans throughout the construction period (anticipated to take eight weeks). We ask that customers also conserve indoor water consumptions throughout this time period. The work will be conducted by Biszko Construction Services of Fall River, Mass, which was awarded the bid. Timeline and budget Biszko will begin construction the week of September 23rd. Repair of the pipeline is expected to take 8 weeks, barring unexpected findings and inclement weather. BCWA will remain connected to the East Providence supply during the repair. The estimated cost for the project is approximately $3.4 million, including a contingency for unexpected conditions. Customers can learn more at https://bcwari.com or by calling the BCWA Emergency Hotline (401) 245-5071 (after 4 pm) or the Customer Service line (401) 245-2022.
